La Academia de la Nueva Raza
Gallery talk with Enrique Lamadrid

Join the New Mexico History Museum every second Saturday of the month from June-February for a presentation and conversation-style gallery talk in conjunction with the current exhibit, Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. Enrique R. Lamadrid is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of New Mexico. He has dedicated his career to studying, publishing about, and teaching on traditional Hispanic culture, folklore, music, and literature. Lamadrid will speak about a group of Chicano intellectuals including Tomás Atencio, E. A. "Tony" Mares, Juan Estevan Arellano, and Cipriano Vigil who founded La Academia de la Nueva Raza (the Academy of the new people). The group aimed to rejuvenate Hispanic culture within a context of homeland. Centered in Dixon, New Mexico, La Academia joined intellectuals, writers, and musicians, and helped situate Hispano heritage and traditions within the context of counterculture by encouraging communities to reengage with their history. Free with admission.
